Feedback from the Summer School 2018

Nearly 40 IAME members gathered on July 1st in the lovely city of Lucca, Italy, for the first event of our association : a summer school to share and explore new ideas related to the field of media education.

On Sunday, 1st July, the general assembly of our association was the start of the summer school. After having presenting the carried out activities, we had debates about the main objectives of IAME and the future.

Social media, fake news and digital capitalism : why we need a critical approach

On Monday, 2nd July, we started with the intervention of Prof. David Buckingham (Loughborough University, UK). In this presentation, David Buckingham considered how media educators should be responding to the rise of social media, and to related controversies about fake news, cyberbullying and online radicalization. Moving beyond narrow ideas about ‘digital skills’ and internet safety, he will argue that we need a more comprehensive and coherent educational approach to rise of ‘digital capitalism’ – one that builds on the existing concepts and pedagogy of media education but extends them in order to meet new challenges.

Media literacy challenged in the digital era

Then the floor was given to Prof. Normand Landry (University of TÉLUQ, Canada). Normand Landry presented a critical discourse analysis of the scope of media education research. It aimed to introduce major issues, to raise discussions and debates.

Roundtable: media education facing media regulation: useful boundaries?

The role and articulation of media education regarding regulation, co-regulation and self-regulation stays a challenging topic for media education sector. Different professional lobbies, very active on some specific aspects of media literacy education, are not always in-line with the educational approach developed by our sector and in some cases counterproductive.
Prof. Ingrid Volkmer (University of Melbourne) was the moderator.

Parallel sessions

After a a well-earned meal, two rounds of parallel sessions were offered during the afternoon. Parallel sessions were organized around 6 core topics of Media Education identified by IAME. Each session started from relevant inputs, projects or practices and discuss the topic identifying the next working steps for the association.

Workshop: Lucca on the move

On Tuesday, July 3rd, this workshop provided participants with the opportunity to discover Lucca’s historical and artistic monuments through a treasure hunt. Mobile devices and the app Wallame supported the visit from different point of views: to search information, document the process, enable the sharing and communication and so on. In this way, participants explored and reflected on the notions of mobility, multimodality, augmented spaces, representation & reality, situated learning.
