David Buckingham (Loughborough University, UK)

In this presentation, David Buckingham (Loughborough University, UK) will consider how media educators should be responding to the rise of social media, and to related controversies about fake news, cyberbullying and online radicalization. Moving beyond narrow ideas about ‘digital skills’ and internet safety, he will argue that we need a more comprehensive and coherent educational approach to rise of ‘digital capitalism’ – one that builds on the existing concepts and pedagogy of media education, but extends them in order to meet new challenges. </img8|right>
