IAME board was pleased to launch a new webinar in its 2021 series: “Meet Media Educators all around the world and their challenges during Covid crisis”.

This new webinar discussed especially the impacts of Covid crisis on Teaching Media Literacy. It took place on Monday 17th May 2021 at 14:00 PM CET.

IAME invited his network to testify about the impacts of the crisis on their specific context.
• What was the impact on your work as a media educator?
• What issues were at the centre of attention? Fake news? Conspiracy theories? Mistrust of traditional media? Scientific information? Freedom of expression?

Our speakers

Irene Andriopoulou (Greece) will talk about media literacy policies during the pandemic in Greece and the EU, from a national organization’s perspective. Irene Andriopoulou is a media literacy policy expert, Head of Research, Studies and Educational Programs Department of the Directorate for Digital Content Development and Management, at EKOME, the National Centre for Audiovisual Media and Communication, in Greece. She is member of the EU Media Literacy Expert Group since 2006 with long experience on media literacy public policy, research & practice. She is co-author of “Media Literacy: Keys to Interpreting Media Messages” and Greek editor of “UNESCO MIL Curriculum for Teachers”. In 2019, she was elected as co-Secretary General of the International Steering Committee for UNESCO MIL Alliance and works as a public advocate for Media and Information Literacy with UNESCO. Irene focuses on evidence – based research combined with practice through public service platforms for a lifelong learning media literacy competence for all. She holds a BA on Communication & Mass Media, Athens University, a Master of Arts in Media Studies, Sussex University, and is a PhD candidate at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on MIL policies.


Marie-Laure Lulé (Belgium) is EU Expert and international coach in Media Literacy & Digital Education. She offers information sessions on media literacy to primary and secondary schools, parents, grand-parents and companies. With the Covid 19 crisis, her work was impacted, the information sessions were drastically reduced in 2020 and then organised online. She will testify to the main themes that were at the centre of the intention such as the challenges of the digital schooling in terms of risks & opportunities approach from how to equip students with appropriate digital tools and skills … to media education ie freedom of expression the consumption of screens; the digital isolation & tik-tok new uses; … etc.


Thomas Knaus (Germany) is a educational scientist. He is an Professor of Educational Science specializing in Media Education and Head of Department of Media Pedagogy at The Ludwigsburg University of Education and Honorary Professor for Educational Informatics at the Faculty of Computer Science & Engineering at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS). He will share his opinion about teaching Media Litteracy during Covid time by sharing us his intervention by video.
