The TADAM consortium – of which IAME is a partner – held its European cross-perspective seminar on 12th and 13th June 2024, which aims to examine the challenges of media and information literacy in the context of the rapid development of AI and its uses.
The aim of the seminar was to provide input for the project on a whole range of issues, starting with the skills needed by users and ways of developing them, the dangers but also the opportunities in terms of disseminating information and around the information and journalism professions, while not forgetting to include more cross-cutting reflections on ethics, creativity and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Objectives of the Seminar:
- Transnational exchange:
- Discuss challenges and issues (inclusiveness, ethics…) related to algorithms and AI in the media.
- Explore perspectives on the effects of AI and algorithms on information production and reception.
- Cross-sector collaboration:
- Foster dialogue among media professionals, content producers, educators, and researchers.
- Identify key areas for investigation to develop media literacy strategies.
- Participatory methodology:
- Engage participants in discussions and collaborative activities.
- Collect recommendations and ideas to prepare the future project regional workshops.
The first day of seminar, Wednesday 12th June, combined expert inputs with interactive sessions.
Pierre Fastrez, Senior Research Associate, F.R.S-FNRS, UCLouvain, gave a first keynote on “Rethinking Media & Information Literacy in a AI-Driven World”.

At the end of the Day, Manuel Gentile (University of Florence) gave a wrap-up presentation “Perspective from the Seminar”
The second day, Thursday 13th June, was dedicated to anticipate and prepare the strategic plan for the decentralised phase of the project which will involve workshops in each partner country: Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, Finland, Montenegro, Macedonia and elsewhere in Europe. The idea is to be able to collect all the best practices, local resources and innovative ideas that can respond to the challenges posed by the use of AI and algorithms in the information process, including disinformation.
Profile of participants
The Seminar gathered 52 participants in presence on June 12th and 28 participants in presence on June 13th. In addition, around 100 people logged on to the online broadcast of 12th June to follow some or all of the presentations and round tables. The seminar was intended to be international and cross-sectoral.
